The Missing Sync for Android User Guide: Mac

The Missing Sync for Android works with Mac applications you already know, such as Address Book, iCal, iTunes and iPhoto, to synchronize contacts, calendars, notes, tasks, bookmarks, music, photos, ringtones, video, documents and files between your Android tablet or phone and Mac computer. Sync wirelessly via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or with a USB cable. The Missing Sync for Android now has full USB sync support for devices running Android OS 2.2+ with carrier activated USB tethering.

Launch The Missing Sync for Android and you'll see the default user interface. This is where you choose media to sync, edit settings, create Plugin Profiles, and synchronize your Mac with your Android phone or tablet.

  1. Setup Assistant ScreenshotThe first time you launch The Missing Sync for Android on your computer the Setup Assistant starts automatically. You can also choose "Setup Assistant" from the "Help" menu to run the Setup Assistant at any time.
  2. The Setup Assistant will:
    • Guide you through installing The Missing Sync and Fliq Apps on your Android device.
    • Guide you through the steps to establish a wireless connection between your Android device and computer, called "Pairing."
    • Generate the unique "Pairing Code" that you type into your device to pair it with the computer.
    • Introduce you to the sync features of The Missing Sync for Android.

If you need to, you can manually install The Missing Sync and Fliq Apps on your device.

First Sync ScreenshotYour Android device should be paired with your computer, and The Missing Sync app installed on your device. If not, run the Setup Assistant now.

Note: To sync calendars, tasks, notes or bookmarks, the Fliq Calendar, Fliq Tasks, Fliq Notes and Fliq Bookmarks apps must also be installed on the Android device.

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. You will see a list of data types, called "Plugins," that can be synchronized between your computer and device. If the "On" box is checked, the data and information for that Plugin will be synchronized on the next sync.
  3. To change Plugin Settings, highlight any Plugin on the list and select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. In the Plugin Settings, you can specify sync preferences for each information type.
  5. With one or more Plugins checked, launch The Missing Sync app on your Android phone or tablet.
  6. On your device, tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  7. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is synchronizing your Android device and computer.

Your first sync may take some time as The Missing Sync does the initial transfer of information and media files between your computer and device. We recommend you wait until the first sync has completed before using your computer or your Android device. Future syncs will synchronize only the changes since the last sync and will not take as long.

The Missing Sync for Android can synchronize your Android device and computer manually or automatically using Mark/Space Proximity Sync.

Manual Sync

Synchronize ScreenYou can perform a manual sync anytime, from The Missing app on your phone or tablet.

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired and The Missing Sync app is installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  3. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  4. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your device and computer.

Proximity Sync™

With Mark/Space Proximity Sync, sync happens automatically and wirelessly when your device is near your computer, even if the device is inside a pocket or bag.

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired and The Missing Sync app is installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. By default, Proximity Sync is set to synchronize "Every 2 Hours." This can be changed in The Missing Sync settings on the device.
  3. To change the Proximity Sync interval:
    • Proximity Sync ScreenSettings ScreenMenu ScreenOn your phone or tablet, launch the Missing Sync app.
    • Press the Menu button, then tap the "Settings..." button. The Missing Sync settings will be displayed.
    • Click "Proximity Sync." A window listing Proximity Sync time intervals will display.
    • Tap an interval to select it.
    • Proximity Sync will sync using the selected time interval.
    • To turn off Proximity Sync, select "Never" at the bottom of the time intervals list.

Proximity Sync will automatically start a sync when your device and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network, or when your phone or tablet comes into Bluetooth range of your computer, depending on which you have chosen during setup.

Contacts sync wirelessly over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and via USB

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired and The Missing Sync app is installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  3. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Contacts is checked.
  4. By default, The Missing Sync will reconcile your contacts so that you have the most current information for all contacts on both your device and computer. This can be changed in the Contacts Plugin Settings window.
  5. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  6. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  7. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your contacts. If you have a large number of contacts, it could take some time to complete the sync.

Sync via USB

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Contacts is checked.
  3. Connect a USB cable to your Android device, and then to your Mac. Confirm that it is NOT mounted as a USB drive on your computer. If you get a message inviting you to "Turn on USB storage" or anything similar, hit the "Home" button.
  4. On the Android device, launch The Missing Sync for Android and tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  5. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your contacts. If you have a large number of contacts, it could take some time to complete the sync.


Contacts Sync Settings

Calendars sync wirelessly, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and via USB for Android 2.2 or later

Sync calendars between your Android phone or tablet and iCal on your Mac. NOTE: Two-way calendar syncing is supported on devices running Android OS 2.0 or later. One-way calendar syncing (from the computer to the Android device) is supported on devices running Android OS 1.5 or 1.6.

Two-way calendar sync — for phones running Android OS 2.0 or later

The calendar app included on Android OS-powered devices syncs with Google Calendar. To sync with a iCal on a Mac we developed the Fliq Calendar app, which works with The Missing Sync to keep calendar events updated and in sync between Android devices and a Mac.

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync and Fliq Calendar apps are installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  3. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Calendars is checked.
  4. By default, The Missing Sync will reconcile your calendars so that you have the most current information on your device and computer. This can be changed in the Calendar Plugin Settings window.
  5. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  6. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.

Sync via USB

  4. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  5. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  6. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information. If you have a large number of calendar events, it could take some time to complete the sync.

One-way calendar sync — for phones running Android OS 1.5 or 1.6

Technical limitations in Android OS 1.5 and 1.6 only allow for a one-way (overwrite) sync. Calendars from the Mac overwrite the calendars in Calendar app on the device.

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync and Fliq Calendar apps are installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  3. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Calendars is checked.
  4. Open the Calendar Plugin Settings window and choose "Always overwrite device with Mac data" from the "Synchronize" drop-down menu.
  5. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  6. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  7. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your calendars. If you have a large number of calendar events, it could take some time to complete the sync.


Calendar Sync Settings

  • Choose "All Calendars" to synchronize all calendar events between the computer and device.
  • Choose "Selected Calendars" to select specific calendars of events to sync. Only the calendars selected will be synchronized.
  • Choose to sync "all events" or "events from" to select a date range to sync. The more data you sync, the greater the chance you may experience sync slow downs and/or memory problems on your device. Mark/Space recommends that you ignore events older than 6 months.

Sync Notes via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync and Fliq Notes apps are installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android and make sure the "On" checkbox for Notes is checked.
  3. By default, The Missing Sync will update your notes so that you have the most current information on your device and computer. This can be changed in the Notes Plugin Settings window.
  4. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  5. Synchronize ScreenTap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  6. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.

Sync Notes via USB

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Notes is checked.
  3. Connect a USB cable to your Android device, and then to your Mac. Confirm that it is NOT mounted as a USB drive on your computer. If you get a message inviting you to "Turn on USB storage" or anything similar, hit the "Home" button.
  4. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  5. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  6. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.


Notes Sync Settings

  • Choose to synchronize with Mark/Space Notebook (installed with The Missing Sync) or Microsoft Entourage.
  • Choose "All Categories" to synchronize all notes between the computer and device.
  • Choose "Selected Categories" to select specific categories of notes to sync. Only notes within selected categories will be synchronized.

Sync contacts, calendars and notes with EntourageThe Missing Sync for Android lets you sync contacts, calendar events and notes with Entourage 2008 using Apple Sync Services, included with Mac OS X. To set-up Microsoft Entourage 2008 to sync:

  • Launch Microsoft Entourage 2008 on your Mac.
  • Choose "Preferences" from the Entourage menu to open the Preferences window.
  • In the left column under "General Preferences", click "Sync Services."
  • Check a box for the information you would like to sync.
  • Launch The Missing Sync for Android. In the Plugin settings for Calendars, Contacts and Notes, you will see an "Entourage" group listed. Check to select Entourage. The information you selected in the Entourage settings (calendars, contacts or notes) will be kept updated when you sync.

Sync Tasks via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync and Fliq Tasks apps are installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.

Sync Tasks via USB

Tasks Sync Settings

  • Choose "All Calendars" to synchronize all tasks between the computer and device.
  • Choose "Selected Calendars" to select specific calendars of tasks to sync. Only tasks associated with selected calendars will be synchronized.
  • Choose to sync "All tasks" or only "Tasks due from" a selected date range.
  • Optionally choose to sync tasks with no due date and completed tasks by checking the appropriate boxes.

Sync music, playlists and podcasts from iTunes to your Android phone or tablet wirelessly or over USB.

Sync Music via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync is installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android and make sure the "On" checkbox for Music is checked.
  3. To choose music, open the Music Plugin settings: highlight Music in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. Music Sync SettingsCheck the box next to "Sync music to my device" and select music playlists, artists, albums, genres or specific songs to sync to your Android phone or tablet.
  5. To sync podcasts, place the podcasts into a playlist and choose that playlist to sync to your device.
  6. Other options in the Music Settings window let you:
    • Specify an amount of memory to keep free on your phone
    • Refresh iTunes Smart Playlists after each sync
    • Specify how often to sync your music
  7. Click "OK" when done.
  8. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  9. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  10. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.
    Synchronize Screen

Album artwork will sync to your device if the artwork is embedded in the music file. To embed the artwork in iTunes, select the song, then choose "Get Info" from the File menu (or use the shortcut Command-I). Select the Artwork tab and then click the "Add" button.

Note: Android devices cannot play music files that are protected by iTunes DRM (Digital Rights Management), such as some music purchased from the iTunes store. Most (if not all) music now available on iTunes is DRM free.


Sync Music with a USB Cable

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Music is checked.
  3. Connect a USB cable to your Android device, and then to your Mac. Confirm that it is mounted as a USB Drive on your computer.
  4. Click the "Sync Media" button to perform a sync.
  5. After the sync has completed, eject your device and unplug the USB cable.
  6. View and listen to your playlists using the music player app on your phone or tablet.

Sync playlists of audio podcasts from iTunes to your device. Choose podcast playlists using the Music plugin.

Choosing Podcasts

  1. Organize audio podcasts you'd like to sync to your device into playlists in iTunes.
  2. Then, on your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  3. To choose a podcast playlist open the Music Plugin settings: highlight Music in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. Select the podcast playlists you'd like to sync to your device. Then, click OK.

TIP: To automatically sync new and unplayed podcasts, create a Smart Playlist in iTunes:

  1. In iTunes, select "New Smart Playlist..." from the File menu and specify these settings:
    • "Match ALL of the following rules"
    • Genre contains Podcast
    • Play Count is 0
    • Check "Live Updating"
  2. All unplayed podcasts will be listed.
  3. Sync this Smart Playlist to your device and you'll automatically have new and unplayed podcasts on your device every time you sync.

Sync Podcasts Wirelessly

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync is installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android and make sure the "On" checkbox for Music is checked.
  3. Synchronize ScreenOn your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  4. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  5. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.
  6. After the sync has completed, view and listen to your podcasts using the music player app on your phone or tablet.

Sync Podcasts Using a USB Cable

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Music is checked.
  3. Connect a USB cable to your Android device, and then to your Mac. Confirm that it is mounted as a USB Drive on your computer.
  4. Click the "Sync Media" button to perform a sync.
  5. After the sync has completed, eject your device and unplug the USB cable.
  6. View and listen to your podcast playlists using the music player app on your phone or tablet.

Personalize your phone with custom ringtones created with The Missing Sync's built-in ringtone editor.

  1. Ringtones SettingsOn your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Ringtones is checked.
  3. To choose ringtones, open the Ringtones Plugin settings: highlight Ringtones in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. Select ringtones to install onto your phone by clicking the checkboxes.* The Missing Sync for Android includes a number of ringtones for you to choose from.
  5. To create your own ringtones from your favorite music:*
    • Click the "Create Ringtone" icon in the toolbar.
    • Create RingtoneSelect a song and use the sliders and cropping handles to select a part of the song to use for the ringtone. Ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long.
    • Click "Create Ringtone" to save the new ringtone. Select it from the list to install it onto your phone the next time you sync.

More information about ringtones:

  1. * iTunes-created ringtones are protected with DRM and will not play on Android phones. If you have any protected ringtones they will appear grayed-out in the Ringtones list.
  2. Included Ringtones: The Missing Sync for Android comes with a collection of custom made ringtones you can use to personalize your phone.
  3. How to create ringtones in GarageBand:
  4. Subscribe to ringtone podcasts in iTunes:
    • Hundreds of ringtones are available as downloads from podcasts. Use iTunes to search podcasts for ringtones and subscribe to the podcasts of your choice (note: some subscriptions are free and some charge a fee). After downloading these ringtones podcasts the ringtones should be selectable in The Missing Sync ringtone plugin on your computer.

Save photos you snap with your Android phone to your computer. Transfer photos and other image files from your computer to your phone or tablet. You can sync photos between your Android device and computer wirelessly or with a USB cable.

Export Photos from Computer to Device

  1. Export Photos ScreenshotOn your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Photos is checked.
  3. To choose photos open the Photo Plugin settings: highlight Photos in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. Click the Export tab at the top of the Settings window.
  5. Check the box next to "Export photos to device" to enable syncing of photos from the computer to the device.
  6. Choose to Export from iPhoto, Aperture, or a folder containing photos and other image files. The Missing Sync will scale the photos to best fit the device screen and to save space.

Import Photos from Device to Computer

  1. Import Photos ScreenshotOn your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Photos is checked.
  3. To choose photos open the Photo Plugin settings: highlight Photos in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. Click the Import tab at the top of the Settings window.
  5. Check the box next to "Import photos to device" to enable syncing of photos from the device to the computer.
  6. Choose to save photos into an iPhoto album or to a folder on your hard drive.
  7. Now, when you sync your phone with The Missing Sync, pictures you have snapped with your phone are saved to your computer automatically.
  8. Other options let you:
    1. Import ALL photos, including ones that were previously imported. This option will save all photos to your computer regardless of whether the or not one or more photos have already been saved.
    2. Delete photos from your device after they are imported to your computer.

Syncing Photos Wirelessly

  1. Make sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync is installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android and make sure the "On" checkbox for Photos is checked.
  3. Synchronize ScreenOn your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  4. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  5. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.
  6. After the sync has completed, view your photos using the photo app on your device.

Syncing Photos Using a USB Cable

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Photos is checked.
  3. Connect a USB cable to your Android device, and then to your Mac. Confirm that it is mounted as a USB Drive on your computer.
  4. Click the "Sync Media" button to perform a sync.
  5. After the sync has completed, eject your device and unplug the USB cable.
  6. View your photos using the photo app on your device.

Enjoy home movies, video podcasts and other digital video on your Android device. The Missing Sync transfers video to your device, or video shot on your phone to your Mac.

Export Video from Computer to Device

  1. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Video is checked.
  3. Drag and drop video files into The Missing Sync window.
  4. Video files to be converted are added to a queue. The queue can be viewed in the "Install" pane.
  5. Converted video files will be transferred to your device the next time you sync. The Missing Sync will convert most video formats into a format that can be viewed on an Android device.
  6. Note: If the "On" checkbox for Video in the main screen is not checked, you can still drag-n-drop video files onto The Missing Sync to install them, but they will not be converted, and may not play on the device.

Import Video from Device to Computer

  1. Video ScreenshotOn your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Video is checked.
  3. To choose videos open the Video Plugin settings: highlight Video in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. Check the box next to "Import videos from device" to enable video sync.
  5. Choose save videos to an existing iPhoto album or to a folder on your hard drive.
  6. Video will be copied from your device to your computer on the next sync.
  7. Other options let you:
    • Import all videos, including those previously imported.
    • Automatically remove videos from the device after importing.

  3. To choose folders to sync open the Folder Sync Plugin settings: highlight Folder Sync in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. You can sync any type of file, but only certain types can be viewed or played on Android devices:
    • Document types viewable on most Android devices include: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and PDF
    • Supported image formats include: JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), PNG (.png) and BMP (.bmp).
    • Supported audio formats include: MP3 (.mp3), MIDI Type 0 and 1 (.mid, .xmf, .mxmf). Also RTTTL/RTX (.rtttl, .rtx), OTA (.ota), and iMelody (.imy), Ogg (.ogg), WAVE (.wav).
    • Supported video formats include: 3GPP (.3gp) and MPEG-4 (.mp4, .m4a). Note: Media formats supported by Android devices can vary. Refer to the user manual for supported formats for your specific device.
  5. Sync a folder to your device, tap the Add (+) icon at the bottom left of the window and select a folder.
  6. In the "Sync Action" column, select from the drop down list:
    • "Synchronizes with" reconciles a folder between device and computer.
    • "Overwrites files in" copies a folder from computer to device.
    • "Is overwritten by" copies a folder from device to computer.
  7. Check the box next to items to be synced.
  8. To remove a folder, select it and click the Remove icon (-) at the bottom left of the window.
  9. The next time you sync, the selected files will be copied to your device.
  10. On your Android device, view documents in apps such as Quickoffice or PDF Viewer, video in the Videos or Video Gallery apps, and audio in the Music app.

Sync Bookmarks via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

  1. Synchronize ScreenMake sure your device and computer are paired, and The Missing Sync and Fliq Bookmarks apps are installed on your device. Run the Setup Assistant if you need help.
  2. On your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android and make sure the "On" checkbox for Bookmarks is checked.
  3. To choose bookmarks open the Bookmarks Plugin settings: highlight Bookmarks in the list, then select "Device > Plugin Settings..." from the File Menu to open the Plugin Settings window. TIP: Double-click on a Plugin to quickly open the settings window.
  4. In the Bookmarks Settings window, choose to sync All Collections or Selected Collections of bookmarks to your device.
  5. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  6. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  7. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.
  8. Open Fliq Bookmarks on your device and see your synchronized bookmarks along side your System bookmarks.

Sync Bookmarks via USB

  1. System BookmarksFliq BookmarksOn your computer, launch The Missing Sync for Android.
  2. Make sure the "On" checkbox for Bookmarks is checked.
  3. Connect a USB cable to your Android device, and then to your Mac. Confirm that it is NOT mounted as a USB drive on your computer. If you get a message inviting you to "Turn on USB storage" or anything similar, hit the "Home" button.
  4. On your device, launch the "Missing Sync" app.
  5. Tap the "Synchronize" button located at the bottom of the main view.
  6. The spinning arrows indicate that The Missing Sync is working to synchronize your information.

Synchronize OptionsThe "Synchronize Options" menu allows you to choose the behavior of the sync for the Contacts, Calendars, Notes and Tasks Plugins.

  • "Synchronize" performs a two-way synchronization between the device and computer. New, changed or deleted information is synchronized so that the most current information is the same on both the device and computer. This is the default setting.
  • "Overwrite device with Mac data on next sync only" replaces all data on the device with data from the computer on the next sync. Once sync has completed this setting will switch back to the default "Synchronize" setting.
  • "Always overwrite device with Mac data" replaces all data on the device with data from the computer on EVERY sync.
  • "Overwrite Mac with device data on next sync only" replaces all data on the computer with data from the device on the next sync. Once sync has completed this setting will switch back to the default "Synchronize" setting.
  • "Always overwrite device with Mac data" replaces ALL data on the computer with data from the device on EVERY sync.

  1. Connect a USB cable to the Android device, and then to the computer.
  2. On the device, pull down the notification window or "window shade" and tap "USB connected, " a notification window will appear.
  3. Tap the USB Drive button or "Mount" to mounts your device on the Mac desktop as if it were an external hard drive or flash drive.
  4. Note: Some Android devices may require slightly different steps to mount as a USB Drive on your computer. Refer to your user manual for more information.

To synchronize wirelessly via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, your Android device must be "paired" with your computer. Pairing establishes a connection between the device and computer, allowing them to synchronize wirelessly. The pairing process is easy, but slightly different for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi syncing.

Pairing for Wi-Fi

  1. Setup Assistant provides the pairing keyIf your device is already paired with a computer, you must first unpair the device.
  2. On your device, locate and tap the "Missing Sync" app icon to launch it.
  3. If your device is not already paired with a computer, you will be asked if you have installed The Missing Sync for Android on your computer. If not, install The Missing Sync for Android before proceeding to the next step.
  4. The Setup Assistant should launch automatically the first time you open The Missing Sync for Android desktop. You can also choose "Setup Assistant" from the "Help" menu to run the Setup Assistant at any time.
  5. The Setup Assistant will generate a unique "Pairing Code" that you can type into your Android device to pair it with the computer.

Pairing for Bluetooth

Note: Bluetooth requires a phone running Android OS 2.0 or later.

  1. If your device is already paired with a computer, you must first unpair the device.
  2. Bluetooth preferencesEnable Bluetooth on your Mac: Open System Preferences and click "Bluetooth." Make sure the "On" checkbox is checked.
  3. Enable Bluetooth on the Android device
    1. On your device, open Settings and tap Wireless & networks.
    2. If Bluetooth is not enabled, tap Bluetooth to turn it on.
    3. Tap Bluetooth settings
    4. If the Discoverable setting is not enabled, tap to enable it.
      Note: Your device will remain discoverable for about two minutes.
    5. Tap the Home key to exit Settings
  4. On your Mac, open System Preferences and click "Bluetooth."
  5. Click the Add icon (+) in the bottom left to open the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.
  6. Follow the instructions to pair your Mac and Android device.
  7. Finally, choose the computer with which your device will sync:
    1. Bluetooth sync settingsOpen The Missing Sync on your Android device.
    2. Tap the "Menu" button, then "Settings, " and then "Bluetooth sync."
    3. A new window will open where you can "Choose Bluetooth desktop."
    4. Tap on the name of your computer.
    5. Press the "Back" button to return to the Missing Sync main screen.

Unpairing removes the connection between the Android device and computer. The unpairing process is different for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

  1. On your phone, launch the Missing Sync app.
  2. Press the "Menu" button, then tap the "Pairing..." button. You will see the "Unpairing The Missing Sync" window.
  3. Tap the "Unpair" button to delete the connection between your device and computer.

Unpairing Bluetooth-Connected Devices

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences and click "Bluetooth".
  2. Find your Android device in the list and select it.
  3. Click the Remove icon (-) in the lower left of the window.
  4. When asked, "Are you sure you want to remove this device?" click Remove.

Installing from the Android Market

If you have not already done so, download and install The Missing Sync and Fliq apps from the Android Market onto your device.

  1. Power on your Android device.
  2. Tap the "Market" icon to launch the Android Market.
  3. Search for "MarkSpace."
  4. Click The Missing Sync and each Fliq icon to download and install them onto your Android device.

Download and Manually Install from Mark/Space

If you do not have access to the Android Market, you can download The Missing Sync and Fliq device-side applications from the Mark/Space web site and install them manually. However, it is highly recommended that you use the Android Market to install device-side apps whenever possible.

  1. On your device, delete any installations of The Missing Sync you may already have. (Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Missing Sync > Uninstall).
  2. Also, enable installation of Non-Market Applications (Settings > Applications > Unknown sources).
  3. Open the web browser on your phone and enter this web address: http://www.markspace.com/apk/ms.apk. The Missing Sync device-side app will download to your device.
  4. Tap the "ms.apk" file once it has finished downloading. (This file appears in the download history if you need to access it at a later time).
  5. Choose "Install" when prompted.
  6. Tap "Open" when the installation has completed.
  7. The first time you launch Missing Sync on your device, you will be asked if you have already installed The Missing Sync for Android on your computer. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
  8. To install the Fliq apps, follow steps 1-6 for each app using the links below:
