Mark/Space recently made a version 6.0.1 beta of The Missing Sync for Palm OS available for testing. This beta fixes an application crash that occurs when the Safari 3 beta is installed, addresses an issue where the Photos conduit does not run in conjunction with other conduits and includes other fixes.
We're working to get 6.0.1 out the door as soon as possible, but if you'd like to try out the 6.0.1 beta, then back up your data and download the 6.0.1 beta installer from the Testing page on the Mark/Space website, where you will also find complete release notes listing all included fixes.
Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 4.0 Beta Available
In the June newsletter, we announced the availability of a 4.0 alpha testing build of The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. Well, this month we're back to announce that version 4.0 is now in beta! The beta release fixes a number of issues that were present in the alpha build, and it also now includes the Video plugin for encoding QuickTime videos for playback on devices running Windows Media Player Mobile version 10 (included with nearly all devices running Windows Mobile 5 or 6).
Version 4.0 of The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, which is slated for release later this quarter, will add support for Windows Mobile 6 devices, offer video encoding for mobile playback and make your call log and SMS text message log usable on your Mac. To learn more about what's in store for version 4.0, please visit the version 4.0 information page page.
If you'd like to try out the 4.0 beta, back up your data first and then download the 4.0 beta installer from the Testing page on the Mark/Space website, where you will also find complete release notes listing all included fixes.
Version 5.1.2 Photos Conduit Fix for Treo 680 Users
When the Palm Treo 680 was released after version 5.1.2 of the Missing Sync for Palm OS had shipped, a change present in the 680 left it unsupported by the Mark/Space Photos conduit. If you are still using version 5.1.2 of The Missing Sync for Palm OS, and you have a Treo 680, then we recommend that you download and install the updated Photos conduit now available from the Mark/Space website. Complete installation instructions are included with the download (though all that's necessary is double-clicking the new Photos conduit and choosing to have it installed for all users).
If you are running version 6.0 of The Missing Sync for Palm OS and are having trouble with a Treo 680, we recommend that you download and install the 6.0.1 beta mentioned in the first article.
The new Mark/Space Photos conduit for Treo 680 users running version 5.1.2 of The Missing Sync for Palm OS is available from the Downloads page on the Mark/Space website.
Windows Mobile 6 Device Survey
If you have tried a 4.0 pre-release build (alpha or beta) of The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile with a Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) device, please let us know by selecting your device on the WM6 Device Poll in our online forums.
All four editions of The Missing Sync (BlackBerry, Palm OS, Sony PSP and Windows Mobile) include a plugin or conduit for transferring music and podcasts from iTunes to your mobile device. BlackBerry devices and Sony PSPs already include player software capable of playing iTunes Plus tracks. No changes are necessary to start playing these tracks on those devices.

Putting "Wallet" Photos on Your Mobile Device
One of the coolest--yet often ignored--capabilities of The Missing Sync is to integrate with iPhoto and download albums of photos to your mobile device. If you have a Windows Mobile device, a Palm OS device or a multimedia-capable BlackBerry (Pearl, 8300 series/Curve or 8800 series), then you can use The Missing Sync to put your favorite photos on your device.
We refer to these as wallet photos, because we use our devices to carry the same types of photos that we might carry in our wallets: photos of family, friends, pets, etc. But by going digital, we can carry many more photos with us than what we could ever hope to fit in a wallet.
Setup of this feature is easy, and ongoing use is automatic. Follow these steps to get started:
In iPhoto version 5.0 or later, create one or more photo albums that contain the photos you want to download to your mobile device.
In The Missing Sync, make sure that the Photos conduit/plugin is turned on, then double-click the Photos conduit/plugin to adjust settings.
In the Photos conduit/plugin settings window, ensure that the checkbox to export photos to the device is checked.
Place a checkmark next to each iPhoto album that you want to download to your mobile device.
Adjust any other settings, such as photo resizing, and click OK (BlackBerry edition) or close the Photos conduit/plugin window (Windows Mobile and Palm OS editions) to save changes.
The next time you connect and synchronize your device, all photos from the albums that you selected will be downloaded to your device and available for viewing on the go.
To update your wallet photos, simply open iPhoto and add or remove photos from the selected albums, or turn on or off syncing of individual photo albums inside the Missing Sync's Photos conduits/plugin settings window.
Now, whether you keep photos of friends and family, or if they make up a professional portfolio, you'll certainly enjoy having your favorite pics at your fingertips whenever you want to show them off!
Troubleshooting Windows Mobile Connection Problems
Sometimes, connecting Windows Mobile devices to synchronize with The Missing Sync can be a little tricky. This is because the device must be able to establish an ActiveSync connection on top of a USB or Bluetooth connection. When a connection problem occurs, there might be several causes, from corrupted Bluetooth preferences on the Mac to manufacturer-specific issues on the device. Regardless of the cause, following some straightforward troubleshooting steps will almost always eradicate the problem.
If you ever have problems getting your Windows Mobile device to connect to your Mac, please make use of our Support Knowledgebase's step-by-step connection troubleshooting articles.
