We've just released version 6.0 of The Missing Sync for Palm OS, a major upgrade that introduces several new features, including a bunch that are designed for Treo smartphone users. Here's a brief rundown on what's new in version 6.0:

Encodes and downloads video for mobile viewing
Access Treo call log information on the Mac
View/search Treo SMS message history on the Mac
Mac Call Log and SMS Log apps integrate with Address Book
Includes new Mark/Space Notebook application for Mac OS X

Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 4.0 Alpha Available
In last month's newsletter, we mentioned that we were working on support for devices running the new Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) operating system, and that we'd have more information available soon. Well, that time has come! You can now download an alpha pre-release build of The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile version 4.0, which includes support for new and upgraded devices running WM6.
In addition to support for WM6 devices, when version 4.0 of The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile ships in the third quarter, it will also include several new features similar to those just released in version 6.0 of our Palm OS edition, as outlined below.
Support for new and upgraded devices running WM6
Video importing to iPhoto or specified folders on the Mac
Video encoding for mobile playback in Windows Media Player 10
View/search Treo SMS message history on the Mac
Device call logs and SMS messages are synced to the Mac
New Mac Call Log and SMS Log apps sort, search, export and more
Call Log and SMS Log apps integrate with Address Book
Version 4.0 will be priced at $39.95 for download, once its available. Version 3.0 purchases made on or after June 1, 2007 will qualify for a free upgrade, otherwise upgrades and crossgrades from eligible Missing Sync products will cost only $24.95.
To learn more about version 4.0, or to download the alpha build to try out some of the new features or connect a WM6 device, click on over to our version 4.0 information page.
At WWDC this week, Apple released a beta version of Safari 3. During the installation of the Safari 3 beta, a new version of Apple's WebKit framework is also installed. Unfortunately, the new WebKit is not yet stable, and applications like The Missing Sync, which use the WebKit framework to render web pages on the Mac, may crash when the WebKit is invoked. For Missing Sync users, this problem will manifest when the Shop tab is clicked and The Missing Sync tries to render the Mark/Space Online Store web pages. Synchronization should not be affected.
Rolling Back Safari & WebKit
Should you wish to return to using your previous version of Safari and the stable WebKit framework, all you need do is run the uninstaller that's included with the Safari 3 beta.
iTunes Plus Songs and Mobile Devices
On May 30, 2007, Apple began offering DRM-free music in the iTunes Music Store from online music partner EMI. Called iTunes Plus, these tracks are available without the digital rights management coding that previously made them playable only on iTunes or iPods. The good news for Missing Sync users is that these tracks can now be played on other devices! (May require additional software. See below.)
All four editions of The Missing Sync (BlackBerry, Palm OS, Sony PSP and Windows Mobile) include a plugin or conduit for transferring music and podcasts from iTunes to your mobile device. BlackBerry devices and Sony PSPs already include player software capable of playing iTunes Plus tracks. No changes are necessary to start playing these tracks on those devices.
If you have a Palm OS or Windows Mobile device, you will need to install a music player with support for AAC-encoded audio files (the encoding method used for iTunes Plus tracks).
The following Palm OS music players can play AAC-encoded music:
We at Mark/Space are already enjoying playing our upgraded iTunes Plus songs on our mobile devices, and we look forward to other recording labels following suit with EMI and Apple.
