1. NEWS: Mark/Space DataCord Serial Cables for Palm/TRG/Visor

Tired of a lack of data cables for your Palm III or VII series? (Palm discontinued their modem cable long ago)

Or one that doesn't require purchase of a travel kit and null modem adaptor? (Palm V series)

Or one that exists at all? ;-) (Handspring Visor)

Get the DataCord, And Connect to Routers, Modems, Unix/Linux Boxes or most any Serial Device!

Mark/Space is pleased to announce our first hardware product, the Mark/Space DataCord series of serial data cables for handheld computers.

The cables are designed for connection to modems, routers, and other serial devices that have a DB-9 or DB-25 connector and will be available in versions designed to connect to all of the currently available devices running PalmOS:

Mark/Space DataCord 3: For the Palm III and Palm VII series (as well as the TRG Pro)

Mark/Space DataCord 5: For the Palm V series

Mark/Space DataCord HS: For the Handspring Visor

The DataCord 3 is available now in limited quantities at $19.95. The DataCord 5 will be available starting June 2000 at $24.95, with DataCord HS to follow ($29.95).

All cables are 3 feet in length, shielded, and feature high quality connectors with blackened metal thumbscrews. DataCord HS also includes the circuitry needed to make the Visor serial lines RS232 voltage level compliant.

2. UPDATED: Online 1.4.1 (PalmOS) Released

Online v1.4.1 has been released!

This minor update includes:

  • Changes to support use of serial cradles/cables with the Handspring Visor (Previous versions often reported error 775 when opening the connection)
  • Optimized "log to memo" o only open/close memo pad as needed. Why? When memo pad open, other apps/drivers can't access it. For example, receiving a beamed note, or using certain virtual drivers that also want to log to memo pad.
For a complete list of changes, see "Release Notes.doc", included with the distribution.

Version 1.4.1 is a free update - just use the serial number you received with version 1.2 or later (registered customers of 1.0-1.2 can request a free 1.4.1 serial number by sending hotsync name in a message to sales@markspace.com).

If you there are features you would like to see implemented in future versions of Online, remember to join the online-talk mailing list to participate in beta discussions and learn of new developments instantly.

The next major features being worked on for Online are the ability to log to and send DOC files (which breaks the 4K memo pad record barrier), telnet connections via TCP, and file transfer protocols (most likely YMODEM or ZMODEM).

3. NEWS: Mark/Space ZMODEM Tool 1.1 now in Public Beta (Mac)

An update to the Mark/Space ZMODEM Tool is now in public beta.

Among the changes are:

  • Manual and Order Form now in PDF format for printing or online viewing
  • Minor cosmetic bugs in status window have been fixed
  • New "Files" panel for setting advanced file receive/send options
  • Crash bug related to notification manager alerts and OS 9 fixed
  • About box easter egg fixed for newer/faster machines

4. NEWS: CyberGauge 3.0 from Neon Software supports PageNOW! (Mac/PC)

Neon Software recently announced CyberGauge 3.0, a significant upgrade to their popular Internet bandwidth measurement application. CyberGauge 3.0 enhancements feature alerts for both non-responsive devices and for traffic thresholds, and comprehensive billing and Quality of Service (QOS) report generation.

CyberGauge is an inexpensive yet powerful Internet management utility which allows users to monitor and analyze the throughput of virtually every Internet router available on the market. Based on the industry standard management protocol, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), CyberGauge can also be used to determine bandwidth utilization on many network-connected devices, such as switches and hubs.

Among other features, CyberGauge alerts can be routed to pagers and digital phones when combined with PageNOW!, from Mark/Space.

5. NEWS: iLog from Sophisticated Circuits adds PageNOW! Support (Mac)

Sophisticated Circuits, recently announced iLog, a powerful Mac OS application that consolidates log data from multiple sources on a network and intelligently acts upon that data.

Now, system administrators and power users can centralize and automate their monitoring of remote systems with this smart "log server," which intelligently filters log messages, sends notifications and even triggers AppleScripts, based on message priority and content. iLog receives standardized log information from local or remote applications and network devices and can respond in several ways, including forwarding it to another machine or a text file; automatically alerting the administrator via a notification, email or pager message; or triggering an AppleScript. iLog also provides access to log information via the Web.

6. TIP: Palm Makes HotSync 2.6.1 Update Available
http://www.palm.com/support/macintosh/hsupdate.html

This tip comes from Palm, Inc:

"Apple Computer, Inc. has released the Mac OS System Update v9.0.2 and v9.0.4 for use with Mac OS 9 operating system. Among other changes, the USB system software has been updated. This has affected the operation of the Palm HotSync(R) Manager software.

As a result, HotSync operations may time out and return an error message when synchronizing with conduits for certain applications, including Meeting Maker and Outlook Express. Other conduits with "long" synchronization times such as AvantGo may also be affected.

If you are an existing Palm Desktop for Macintosh v2.5 user and would like to correct these issues, download the HotSync v2.6.1 from Palm's Support page at http://www.palm.com/support/macintosh/hsupdate.html"
